چکیده
— The ecological functioning of the Senegal River estuary and Lower Delta was negatively affected by the construction of the Diama dam in 1986. As from 1994, managed flood releases were used to rehabilitate part of the floodplain and to create an artificial estuary. By simulating the pre-dam hydrodynamics, ecosystem functions were restored. This allowed the local inhabitants to resume their traditional livelihood activities and had positive impacts on biodiversity. The rapid flood recession, which characterised the pre-dam hydrodynamics, has been the most difficult aspect to emulate, for three main reasons : opposition from the fisherfolk who want to keep the fish in their basins, park managers who want to extend the season for waterbirds and the difficulty of evacuating water at flood recession because of the filling in of waterways by Coastal Ecosystems of West-Africa Biological Diversity-Resources-Conservation (Edited by J.-J. Vocalization activity of breeding shorebirds: documentation of its seasonal decline and applications for breeding bird surveys
We documented vocalization activity of breeding shorebirds at two sites in northern and western Alaska, on the Colville River Delta and on the Yukon – Kuskokwim Delta. At both sites, number of calling individuals decreased throughout the season. Variation in vocalization activity was significantly higher at the Colville River Delta towards the end of the season, while weather variables affected...

متن کاملImpacts of episodic acidification on in-stream survival and physiological impairment of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts
We conducted field studies to determine the levels of acid and aluminum (Al) that affect survival, smolt development, ion homeostasis, and stress in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) smolts in restoration streams of the Connecticut River in southern Vermont, USA. Fish were held in cages in five streams encompassing a wide range of acid and Al levels for two 6-day intervals during the peak of smolt ...
متن کاملMitigation of negative ecological and socio-economic impacts of the Diama dam on the Senegal River Delta wetland (Mauritania), using a model based decision support system
The delta of the River Senegal was modified substantially by the construction of the Diama dam in 1986 and the floodplain and estuarine areas on the Mauritanian bank were affected severely by the absence of floods. In 1994, managed flood releases were initiated in the Bell basin (4000 ha) of the Diawling National Park, as part of a rehabilitation effort. The basin was designated as a joint mana...
متن کاملImpacts of urbanization on net primary productivity in the Pearl River Delta, China
Great changes in land use/land cover from rapid urbanization have occurred in the PearlRiver Delta, China. As the primary cause of land development in the urbanization process, urban expansion has mostly occurred on land with higher NPP, significantly impacting theregional ecosystems. The primary purpose of this study was to reveal the impacts of urbanexpansion on the regional NPP. The land cove...
